We love all things vintage. Furniture with character. Older pieces. You know the kind...when you say to yourself, "they just don't make it like that anymore!"
Knot Too Shabby is our store that combines a selection of eclectic vintage housewares and home decor with our true passion: refinished furniture. We strive to preserve the rich history that each piece of furniture offers, through altering the cosmetic appearance with paint while preserving the original hardware, stain, or paint in the distressing process.
Old furniture and vintage decorations offer character and charm that you simply don't see in contemporary items! Even "new" vintage (like Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn) are mass-manufactured and don't offer the charming imperfections that are so prevalent in pieces that have been loved over the years.
Most antique pieces, no matter how well made have their quirks. A sticky drawer, a slightly miss-aligned door, etc. We want you to love what you buy, so before you take it home open every drawer, look inside every cabinet, check the furniture backing! Love every imperfection that it has to offer because once its paid for, we don't accept returns or exchanges.
Michele-Owner, Furniture RestorerI graduated from California Lutheran University with my Bachelors in History and continued graduate school at Azusa Pacific University, earning my M.A. Degree in Organizational Leadership. I have worked professionally for Target, Lewis Operating Company, The City of Anaheim Fire Department and The Spectrum Services Group. With two little girls, I built up the courage to quit my full time professional job and be a stay-at-home mommy. Now, I'm a stay-at-store mommy. So, you will likely see my rugrats with me, helping me paint furniture, displaying their artwork amidst the furniture displays or watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on you tube on the store computer. I'm blessed to be able to do something that I enjoy while spending my days with the girls! I'm also blessed to have so many generous people offer their time and talents to help me with this venture. I wrote about each member of the team, so enjoy reading a little bit about their contributions from my perspective!
Caitlin-Online Sales and Store Manager
Super fun, quirky and ambitious, Caitlin graduated from USC and started her own photography business...Killer Cupcake Event Photography! She is enormously talented! She takes amazing pictures and is a killer writer! You can catch a glimpse of her work by visiting our Etsy store or searching for our finds on eBay. I think one of the coolest things Caitlin has been involved with is her work in research and development with Marvel Studios! She was involved in the research for Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers. We are super lucky to have nabbed Caitlin for our online sales and merchandising!
Michelle E. Black-Merchandising, Packaging and Image Transfer Artist
To properly introduce Michelle, I have to explain how we met. The first time I met her in the store in 2011, she meandered around, looked and me and said "We are going to be best friends!" When she left, I looked at my Mo-in-law and said, "we are so not going to best friends. That girl is crazy." Years later, that girl is still crazy, but we are two pieces of crazy that go perfect together! Michelle provides the artwork merchandise in the store, utilizing the image transfer method that she has perfected over the years. We collaborate on many different projects, business development and inventory packaging. She also offers Image Transfer Workshops on a monthly basis. Michelle and I are out to change the world, one artistic movement at a time.
Sabrina-Milk Paint Guru and Organizing Queen
Sabrina was our very first intern, willing to be the guinea pig for our new intern program. That was back in 2012! During her internship, she learned how to use all of the different paint mediums and complete a variety of decorative finishes. She set herself apart as being the one to always go for milk paint on her projects! Sabrina was a natural fit to fill in at the store when we needed an extra person on hand, and she has since become a very valuable part of the team!
Macy does it all. She is a full-time student at Citrus, she works in the store, babysits my girls, paints furniture, does most of my modge podging, cleans the store from top to bottom, picks up great finds, organizes my endless messes in the back room...and more! Macy has a great eye for style and adds a touch of contemporary flair to the pieces she works on! We looooove Macy's fun and chipper personality when she works, and I promise, you will too!
I've known Audra (pictured on the right) since before knot too shabby existed. We are mommy friends, attending the same mom and me activities and participating in church events. With an artistic flair and a love for painting, she became a quick back-up when we needed inventory to fill space. Since then, Audra works one afternoon every week while I watch her two little ones. She also is our only other certified paint instructor and has allowed us to offer more workshops every month! In fact, everyone should take at least one class with Audra, who will have you walking out the door inspired and motivated!
Mom-Master Furniture Mover, Picker Partner and Life Saver
Mom (Sue) and I share a very special picking relationship. We have been yard sale partners for years! Every Saturday morning, I pick up my mom at the crack of dawn to scout the sales. We call it our "special time." What with the kids and hubs, we don't get that alone time often. Every Sunday morning, mom wakes up with bruises up and down her arms and legs from all of the furniture moving she helps me with! Poor mom! She also works in the store during the week, helps prep pieces that are being stored in her garage and rescues me from my kids when they are tearing the store apart, makes me dinner every Tuesday night, etc. Tell mom thanks when you see her because she volunteers, too!
Kathie-Master Shopper and Supply Picker UpperKathie is my mother-in-law and saves my life by doing all of my shopping! She picks up supplies for the store, odds and ends that I need to finish projects, stuff I need for home...I really hate shopping and she is so good at it! She also works in the store a couple of days a week and will cover at the last minute for me so that I can work on custom projects at home or get a new piece ready for Furniture Friday! Kathie is retired too, so she is always a phone call away from picking up my girls, grabbing us lunch if my fridge is empty, or anything else that is needed! Please say thank-you to Kathie when you see her, because she rarely gives me the receipts for store supplies and purchases!
Dad-Trash Picker, Furniture Fixer and Fellow Diet Coke Junkie
I can thank my dad for my horrific Diet Coke habit, but he is the first to run and grab a soda for me before I start a shift! Dad is a converted yard sale and trash picking enthusiast. In the old days, when Mom and I use to go yard saling, Dad would stay at home and comment on how what we bought was gross. "Why would someone want another persons junk?" But, over time he would watch the "junk" I brought home be transformed into something entirely new and beautiful. And, he has since become a fellow picker...even from the trash. Dad has also taken some woodworking classes in the past few years and is accomplished at completing minor repair work on anything from dressers to chairs. Aside from helping at the store with Mom every week, Dad is a great Papa and loves hanging out with the girls when I'm working!
